http://www.reit.com The public markets appear to be the best places right now for commercial real estate companies to seek out capital, according to Barden Gale, CEO of global Real Estate Investment management firm J.E. Robert Companies. However, that doesn’t mean the market is ready for a flurry of companies going public. Gale notes that while private players may be willing to finance safer investments in core assets, the appetite isn’t there for a “more adventurous” commercial real estate strategies. “If you’re looking to build a platform, if you’re looking to build an operating company, if you’re looking to do anything that has assets that are slightly out of favor or has a certain element of market risk today, it’s very difficult to aggregate private capital,” he says. The companies contemplating going public are finding themselves dissuaded by market volatility and underlying economic uncertainties, Gale says. The most successful offerings are likely to be private companies taking their portfolios public, according to Gale.
